Genu valgum is more commonly referred to as knock-knee. When someone with genu valgum stands with their knees together, there is a gap between the ankles of about 8 cm(3.1 inches) or more. The knees will appear to push in toward each other.

It is most common in children, typically affecting 3- to 6-year-olds. In most young children, the condition will naturally correct itself by age 7 years. The condition is slightly more common in girls, though boys can develop it too .In rare cases, genu valgum may continue into adolescence. In other cases, older children or adults may develop .

The prevalence of genu varumand genu valgum was 8.6% and 10.0%, respectively. There was a significant adverse correlation between the Q angle and BMI.

Causes

  • The major cause of knock knees is deficiency of Vitamin D in these children. Vitamin D helps in calcium absorption and assimilation of calcium in the bones, making them strong.
  • Other reasons for knock knees are knee/ ligament injuries, fractures, etc.
  • Patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis may also develop knock knees.
  • genetic conditions affecting the development of the bones or joints.
  • obesity
